Frequently asked questions
How is SIP maturity value calculated?
Using the future value of a growing annuity formula, which compounds each monthly investment for the time remaining in the investment period. The exact formula is FV = P × [((1+r)^n − 1) / r] × (1+r), where P is the monthly amount, r is the monthly rate, and n is the number of months.
Are SIP returns guaranteed?
No — the return rate you enter is an assumption based on historical or expected fund performance. Actual mutual fund returns fluctuate and are never guaranteed; this calculator shows a projection, not a promise.
What's a realistic return rate to assume?
It depends entirely on the fund and market conditions — equity funds have historically returned more than debt funds over the long term, but with more volatility. This calculator doesn't recommend a rate; use whatever assumption fits your own research.
What's the difference between SIP and a lump sum investment?
SIP spreads your investment across regular monthly contributions, which averages your purchase cost over time (rupee cost averaging), while a lump sum invests everything at once. Both can be modeled — for a lump sum, use the Compound Interest Calculator instead.
