How SSY's deposit and maturity timelines actually work
Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana has a slightly unusual structure worth understanding: you only need to deposit for the first 15 years after opening the account, but the account itself doesn't mature until 21 years from opening. For those final 6 years, your existing balance keeps earning interest without needing further contributions — this calculator's default 21-year tenure reflects that full growth period, even though real deposits typically stop after year 15.
Because SSY currently offers a higher rate than PPF (8.2% vs. 7.1%) with the same EEE tax treatment, it's often the stronger choice specifically for a girl child's long-term savings — though the trade-off is that it's restricted to that specific purpose and eligibility (a girl child under 10 at account opening), unlike PPF which anyone can open for themselves.
